Understanding Pulse Induction (PI) Metal Detectors

PI metal detectors work by transmitting pulses of electromagnetic energy into the ground. When the pulses encounter a metal object, they induce a secondary current in the object. This secondary current is then detected by the detector, indicating the presence of metal.

Wind the coil: Wrap the enameled copper wire around the ferrite core. The number of turns will depend on the desired sensitivity.

Connect the components: Assemble the circuit on the breadboard following the diagram.

Power the circuit: Connect the battery to the circuit.

Test the detector: Hold the coil over a metal object and listen for a tone from the headphones or speaker.

Experiment with coil size: A larger coil can detect deeper targets but may also be heavier to swing.

Adjust the circuit: You can experiment with different component values to fine-tune the detector's sensitivity and response.

Add a discriminator: A simple discriminator circuit can help you differentiate between ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
